IndieBOOM
DJ Rules and Responsibilities
For the purposes
of this agreement, Mark Sweetnam (aka Kilgore), the owner of IndieBOOM
and its parent corporation, will be referred to as “Station
Manager” The station, IndieBOOM, will be referred to as
“Station”.
- The DJ
position at the Station is unpaid. It is a volunteer position.
- DJs will
play only the music that is in the “vault”. The
vault is defined as the folder on the Station’s FTP server
entitled “OK Music”. DJs may not play music that
is not in the vault under any circumstances without the prior
approval of the Station Manager. This applies even if DJs know
for a fact that the artist has given full approval. DJs may
have access to other folders, but material in those folders
do not have on-air approval. Live performances and artist interviews
are encouraged. Please discuss such events with the Station
Manager if you have any questions about the appropriateness
or air-ability of your live show plans.
- Only the
Station Manager and his assigned “Vault Managers”
can add files to the “OK Music” folder (the vault)
on the FTP server. DJs should not attempt to upload files to
the vault.
- If, for
whatever reason, a song or artist is removed from the vault,
DJs will be given notice via their personal email addresses
and their indieboom.com accounts. DJs must immediately remove
the material from their hard disks and not play the material
on air.
- DJs may
not, for any reason, use the music files they download from
the Station for any purpose other than to review prior to on-air
shows and for broadcast on the Station’s streams. DJs
may not share the files with anyone who is not a current staff
member of the Station.
- As a DJ,
your role is to inform and entertain our listening audience
in a professional, respectful, and ethical manner. The reason
the station exists is to promote the music of our Indie artists
to the widest possible audience. Therefore, the Station requires
you to speak in a respectful manner and not engage in “offensive”
topics that include, but are not limited to, topics that are
degrading to others, promoting illegal activities, excessively
offensive, of an extreme graphic sexual nature, or contain excessive
vulgar language. Language permitted includes infrequent use
of the following words, “bitch, sucks, piss, damn (used
alone), hell, and shit”. If you are unsure of a topic,
word, or a phrase, do not say it. Talk to the Station Manager
first.
- Drinking
on air is permitted. DJs broadcast from their own homes, after
all. DJs will, however, maintain the ability to perform their
duties in a professional manner.
- DJs are
responsible to show up online, on time, and be prepared for
their shows. If you are going to be late, please make every
effort to notify any staff member, preferably someone online.
If you cannot make your show due to sickness, unavoidable scheduling
conflicts, or any other valid reason, you are responsible to
notify the Station as soon as possible. If there is a staff
forum, there will be a message board provided for this purpose.
If such a forum is nonexistent, or not functioning, contact
the Station Manager. Excessive absences will not be tolerated.
- DJs will
be the "hosts" of the Station's chatroom during their
shows. They will conduct themselves in a professional manner
in the chatroom, and they will be respectful of other staff
and visitors in the chat. It would be wise for DJs to consider
public chat conversations similar to on-air speaking. DJs need
not honor song requests from anyone in the chat, nor should
they feel any need to honor requests for on-air announcements
or greetings. These are at the DJ's discretion. The chatroom
is not the focal point of the Station. What goes on in the chat
is not necessarily of any interest whatsoever to those who will
likely be the average listeners. DJs will minimize references
to the current events in the chat on air, but they should invite
listeners to join the chat from time to time.
- DJs will
play on-air advertisements as required by the Station. Ad schedules
will be clearly posted in staff forums or other non-public links.
DJ's are encouraged to create promos advertising their own shows
or special events.
- DJs understand
that violation of any of the rules above will result in termination.
DJs also understand that they, and not the Station, are legally
responsible for whatever they may say on air or type in the
chatroom that is in violation of this agreement.
- As a DJ,
you will receive the following at no cost to you:
- A
valid, legal license of SAM Broadcaster. This will be good
for three months and will require the entry of a new code
after every three months of use. Upon leaving the Station
for any reason, you hereby agree to fully uninstall the
software.
- A
personal @indieboom.com email account. You should install
this in your email program (i.e., Outlook) and check it
daily, unless you are out of town or otherwise unavailable
for a long period of time.
- A
personal IndieBOOM FTP account that only you can use. You
will not, under any circumstances, share the username and
password with anyone else, including other DJs. If you lose
or forget your login information, contact the Station Manager
– not another DJ.
- At
least one 2-hr, permanently scheduled shift, unless you
are assigned “floating” duties.
- All DJs
must understand that this is an upstart effort, and that these
guidelines may change. These guidelines will be posted on the
FTP server and will be available online under a non-public link.
When they change, the Station Manager will send out notices
to all DJs through their personal and IndieBOOM email accounts.
If there’s a staff forum, a notice will be posted there,
too.
